Every year, Kiama Woodcraft Group members participate in our “Club Challenge”.

Towards the end of the year, each member is given an identical piece of timber, one “super foot” in size: that’s a volume equivalent to 12 inches x 12 inches x 1 inch thick (310mm x 310mm x 25mm). The actual dimensions of the pieces vary each year depending on the timber available e.g. it could be 12″ x 6″ x2″ – but it’s the same volume of timber.

The Bearded Bloke Timber Collective at Oak Flats donates the Club Challenge timber – Ross tries to find a new and interesting species for us each year.

Members can make anything they like with the piece of timber, and bring their projects along for display at the annual Expo in March. The items are displayed together, and the public is encouraged to vote for the entry they like most. At the end of the Expo, the votes are tallied and the winner is awarded a perpetual trophy and bragging rights until the following year.

It never ceases to amaze me how varied the entries are! No two people see the same thing inside that identical piece of wood.
