At our Expo in March, another member introduced me to a young man who was having difficulty cutting up fruit and vegetables due to the restricted use of his left arm and hand because of illness. He needed a specialised cutting board that would allow him to hold and cut with one hand.
After a discussion and some emails about his requirements, we decided on a board with a number of stainless-steel spikes that would hold the fruit or vegetables in position while he cut them.
I shaped the board out of a Red oak “Bunnings” board. For the spikes, a friend gave me a length of 2.4mm 316 Stainless TIG wire. This was held in a three-jaw chuck to file the point on the end and then cut to length and moved up to shape and cut the next one.
With 25 spikes made, a series of 2.5mm holes were drilled and they were epoxied into the board.
For safety, it was decided to have a cover that slipped over the spikes when not in use. This was turned up from an off-cut of Camphor Laurel.
The board and cover were given a coat of Food Grade Mineral Oil and then buffed with Cutting Board Wax.
