On Friday the 13th of September, thirteen members of the Kiama Woodcraft Group tempted fate (or at least triskaidekaphobia!) and visited the Five Islands WOODtec school at Port Kembla.

The owner of Five Islands WOODtec, David Wilson, used to be an industrial arts teacher and ran a program at Five Islands Secondary College to teach woodworking skills and prepare students for careers in the trades. That program ended a couple of years ago.

The school then asked David if he would still like to run his lessons privately, renting the school’s workshop facilities on Fridays when there were no other classes. He jumped at the opportunity and started up his woodwork training business.

The courses are structured around the high school terms – each course runs for 8 weeks, starting in the second week of the school term. There are two 3-hour workshops each Friday – one in the morning (8:30-11:30) and one in the afternoon (12:30-3:30). The cost is a very reasonable $200 for the 8 weeks.

The next course starts on October 25 and runs through to December 13.

A number of club members have already signed up! If you’d like to know more, email David Wilson at dwilson15@bigpond.com.
